She studied acting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and made her debut in the British television show Just William (2010). Cinderella was her breakthrough role after her stint playing the character Lady Rose MacClare, in Downton Abbey's period drama (2012-2015). James then portrayed the Countess Natasha Rostova as part of the TV adaptation of War & Peace (2016). She also starred in a number films including Baby Driver (2017) and The Dig -2021. We Go Again 2018 and Yesterday (2019). Pam & Tommy, a biographical television series based on the life of Pamela Anderson (released in 2022), earned her nominations for a Golden Globe Award winner and the Primetime Emmy Award.
