Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. When she was a young girl Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to the word association. Ford began acting during her teen years and joined part of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she didn't fit in. Ford was then able to apply to be a student in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. One of her classmates was Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut in Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1991. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. She worked on stage regularly and was a member of The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate began to gain attention for her stand up comedy in the year 1996.
